About our partnership
IKEA and WWF have been working together side by side since 2002, on forests, cotton, water and climate, with the aim to protect, manage and restore key landscapes and enhance biodiversity.
Through engagement in 12 countries spanning across Europe, Asia and South America, WWF and IKEA are committed to improving responsible forest management across the forest sector. We work to improve agricultural production through in-the-field collaboration where we are testing innovative methods for protecting entire landscapes around cotton farms. We are committed to address water challenges with water stewardship, to improve water management, both within IKEA supply chain and beyond.
The scope of our partnership has increased over time. We started working together on forests in 2002, and during 2005 the partnership expanded its collaboration to include better cotton cultivation, in 2008 we scaled up climate-related efforts, followed by water stewardship projects in 2014. The combined expertise of our two organisations gives us the ability to influence entire markets and inspire sustainable business practices, delivering conservation and resource stewardship that would not otherwise be possible. As of 2025, building on our long-term work in cotton, the partnership is expanding its focus to a wider range of agricultural commodities—including beef, leather, and soy. The climate work is also as of 2025 integrated across the programmes.
The partnership is managed by WWF Sweden and Inter IKEA Group, focussing on raw materials and supply chains.
About IKEA
The WWF and IKEA global partnership is organised under Inter IKEA Group. Beyond the global partnership, there may also be national partnerships. These are local activities between a WWF national office and a national IKEA sales office and are not driven by the global partnership.
Inter IKEA Group is the group of companies that connects IKEA franchisees with range development and suppliers, and aligns the overall IKEA strategic direction. The Group includes Inter IKEA Systems B.V. – the worldwide IKEA franchisor – as well as range development, supply and certain industry activities. Ingka Group (IKEA Retail) is one of 12 franchisees, operating IKEA stores and other sales channels under franchise agreements with Inter IKEA Group, the owner of the IKEA Concept and worldwide IKEA franchisor. Inter IKEA Group and Ingka Group have the same founder, as well as a common history and heritage, but are two groups of companies with different management and different owners.
